Retired Marine Gen. Fred E. Haynes received the Bronze Star for his actions as operations manager for the regiment that seized Mount Suribachi during the World War II battle for Iwo Jima.

Those Marines - photographed raising the U.S. flag after the siege - became an icon of the Pacific campaign.

The Dallas native also served during the Korean and Vietnam wars before becoming a senior member of the United Nations Military Armistice Command and as attaché to Turkey.

Gen. Haynes, 89, died March 25 of pneumonia at a New York Hospital.

A memorial was held July 22 at Fort Myer in Arlington, Va.

"He was a good guy," said his brother, Jerry Haynes, a Dallas actor best known as Channel 8's Mr. Peppermint. "We called him Bigs."

Gen. Haynes graduated from high school in Plano, where his grandfather Fred Schimelpfenig was mayor.

"He used to sit in the living room in Plano and listen to the opera," Jerry Haynes said of his brother. "We had a picture of Mona Lisa on the wall. He would take a baseball and throw it at her and say, 'Let's play ball, Mona.' "

Gen. Haynes worked summers at The Dallas Morning News in the advertising department while earning his bachelor's degree from Southern Methodist University. He was student body president in 1942.

He was an SMU graduate student when he joined the Marines. Gen. Haynes later received a master's degree in international affairs from George Washington University.

At the Iwo Jima landing on Feb. 19, 1945, he was with the 28th regiment of the 5th Marine Division. He was promoted to general in 1968. He commanded the 5th Marine Division in Vietnam and later served as operations manager for the country's five northernmost provinces.

Gen. Haynes was founder of the Iwo Jima Association.

In addition to his brother, Gen. Haynes is survived by his wife, Bonnie Haynes of New York; a daughter, Karen Frances Haynes of McLean, Va.; twin sons, Fred Elmore Haynes of McLean and William Lane Haynes of Washington, D.C.; a stepdaughter, Alexandra Samantha Tramont of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a sister, Mary Louise Hayden of Portland, Ore.; and several grandchildren.
