Resolution of Sympathy

Daniel Arthur Juren, 90, longtime postmaster at Ellinger, died Friday, October 23, 1992 in St. Luke's Hospital in Houston.
Funeral services were held Monday, October 26, 1992 at 10 A.M. at Sergeant Memorial funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Henry Beseda and the Rev. Milton Maly officiating. Burial was in the La Grange City Cemetery.
Mr. Juren was born March 13, 1902 in Fayetteville, the youngest child of the late Rev. Hnery and Frances Schiller Juren. He was united in marriage with Ellen Emily Zabcik on November 22, 1923 in Rosebud, Texas. Mrs. Juren passed away in November 1991.
A longtime resident of Fayette County, Mr. Juren served as postmaster of the Ellinger Post Office for 30 years. Concurrently, he operated a barber shop for more than 50 years, maintained an income tax preparation service, and for a number of years, managed a large farming operation.
In addition to his multiple business activities, Mr. Juren was active in a variety of church and community affairs. He was a member of the Fayetteville Brethren Church, serving as president of the Board of Elders. In prior years, he also served as choir director of the church where his father had been minister. He was a member of the Mutual Aid Society, and for many years was the Business Manager of the Brethren Journal, a monthly church publication.
He held a number of leadership positions in the community. Mr. Juren was a charter member of the Ellinger Chamber of Commerce, serving as its first secretary and later as its president for a number of years. He was a member of SPJST Lodge no. 51 since 1926, serving as secretary/treasurer for 48 years. He was a member of the Fayetteville Masonic Lodge. An avid sports enthusiast, he was at one time a correspondent sportswriter for the Houston Post and the San Antonio Light. He was also elected to the South Central Texas Semi-Pro Baseball Hall of Fame.
Mr. Juren was named an Outstanding Senior Citizen of Fayette County in 1987. Mr. and Mrs. Juren were honored in 1988 by being presented with and Outstanding Citizens Award by the Ellinger Community.
Surviving are two children, Dennis Juren and his wife, Ruth, of Houston and Gladys J. Plueckhahn and husband, Bill of Dallas; one brother, Richard Juren of Fort Worth; one half-sister, Ella Adlong of Cypress; five grandchildren, four great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
As a teenager Daniel worked at several jobs in Houston and Temple; mostly as a waiter in a Cafe and as a soda jerk in an Ice cream Confectionery. Later he went to Ranger, Texas where he and his brothers William, Richard and Fred were employed by the American Railway Express Company.
In 1923 went to Molter's Barber College in Houston. After graduating from barber college, Daniel moved to Ellinger and went into the barbering business. He remained in this profession for 53 years.
While being a barber Daniel also spent some time as a news reporter and sports reporter. He wrote articles for the Houston Post and San Antonia Express. As if this was not enough to keep him occupied, Daniel served as manager of the Turner Estate. This was a 1700 acre plantation with 14 tenants. He served as manager from 1941 to 1972. Daniel also found the time to serve as the Postmaster in Ellinger.

Fayette County History

Daniel A. Juren, the son of Reverand Jindrich and Frances Schiller Juren was born on March 13, 1902 near Fayetteville, Texas and during his youth worked at a variety of jobs on the farm, in the oil fields in central Texas and for the Railway Express Company.   He subsequently attended barber college and following his marriage on November 22, 1923 to Ellen Zabcik, daughter of Joseph and Kristina Mikeska Zabcik, settled in Ellinger, Texas.
He was a life long member of the Fayetteville Brethren Church where he served as a member of the Board of Elders since 1935 and President since 1955. He was a member of the SPJST Lodge #51 since 1926 and a member of Lodge #240, Ancient free and Accepted Masons of Texas.
Involvement in community affairs was a way of life for Dan and Ellen. Dan was a member of the City Council during Ellinger's period of incorporation and was President of the Chamber of Commerce for many years.
Dan became Postmaster in 1941 and served until he reached mandatory retirement age in 1972.   For many of those years. Ellen worked as a clerk in the Post Office and Dan pursued a variety of other business activities, including barbering, management of the Turner Estate farm and a tax preparation service.
Dan received numerous recognitions during his lifetime   He was named as an Outstanding Senior Citizen of Fayette County, was elected to the South Central Texas Semi-Pro Baseball Hall of Fame and along with his wife, Ellen, were named Outstanding Citizens by the Ellinger Community.
Dan, who passed away on October 23, 1992, at age 90, was preceded in death by Ellen who passed away on November 28, 1991 at age 89. They had two children, Gladys Juren Plueckhahn and Dennis F. Juren.
