Charner Leroy Stevens (Dr.) was born 8 Feb 1888 Pinopolis, Berkeley Co., S.C., a son of Joseph Goodlou and Eugenia Eliza (Harvey) Stevens.

He attended Clemson University. The 1908 Yearbook documents his promotions from Corporal to Sergeant to Lieutenant in the Cadet Corps. He graduated from the Medical College of South Carolina, interned at Roper Hospital in Charleston, S.C., and practiced medicine in Campobello.

Charner registered for the draft 5 Jun 1917 in Spartanburg Co., S.C. His draft card describes him as medium height and build with brown eyes and dark brown hair.

He completed Officers Reserve Corps and was appointed 1st Lieutenant in the Medical Corps 21 Aug 1917. The highest rank he held in service was Major. He served in the Medical Corps until his honorable discharge 23 Sep 1919. He served with the American Expeditionary Forces 9 Sep 1917 to 9 Aug 1919. He returned home on the SS Savoie leaving from Le Havre, France, 31 Jul 1919. Stateside, he was stationed in New York, N.Y.; Camp Dix, Wrightstown, N.J.; Camp Lee, Va., and Camp Gordon, Ga. His service number was O-147012.

He married Marion Jackson (1897-1977). In 1920, they were living with Marion’s parents (John and Mary Jackson) on Appalachian Rd., Campobello, Spartanburg Co. In 1930, they were living on Gowensville Rd., Campobello, Spartanburg Co., S.C., and Charner was a physician in general practice. In 1940 and 1950, they were still living in Campobello, but there is no occupation listed for Charner.

Charner died of bronchopneumonia, arteriosclerotic heart disease, acute myocardial infarction, and cerebral thrombosis 7 Aug 1974 in St. Luke’s Hospital, Tryon, N.C. He was buried in Campobello First Baptist Church Cemetery, Campobello, Spartanburg Co., S.C.

Husband of MARION JACKSON STEVENS and native of Pinopolis, SC and the son of Joseph Goodlou and Eugenia Eliza Harvey Stevens. He died Wednesday morning at St. Luke's Hospital in Tryon, NC after a brief illness. A World War I Veteran who served in Le Harve, France. He was survived by several nieces and nephews. He was 86 years of age at his demise.
