Maj. Gen. William S. Fellers, USMC (Ret.)

Funeral services for Maj. Gen. William S. Fellers, USMC (Ret.) who died Saturday, will be conducted at 4 p.m. Wednesday in St. Peter's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Robert Beeland, rector, will officiate with interment following in Sunset Hills Memorial Garden. Maj. Gerald Brodeur, Marine Barracks, Quantico, VA., former inspector-instructor for the Marine Corps Reserve unit in Rome and longtime friend of General Fellers, will be in charge of military rites at the graveside. The body will lie in state at Jennings Funeral Home and the family will be at 5 Woodland Dr. Gen. Fellers was born Dec. 16, 1895, son of the late William S. and Isabell Creswell Hopping Fellers. He had served with the Marine Corps for 38 years until his retirement June 23, 1954, at which time he came to Rome to make his home. During his military career he served in China, Japan, Iceland, Okinawa, Nicaragua and was with the First Marine Division in the Guadalcanal landing during World War II. He was a communicant of St. Peter's Episcopal Church and a member of the Rome Rotary Club. His wife, the former Miss Ellison Bedell, died Sept. 13, 1972 and a daughter, Miss Peggy Fellers, died Oct. 21, 1968. Survivors include a son, William S. Fellers Jr., stationed in Vietnam; three sisters, Mrs. Katherine Grodzicki, Mrs. Helen Schloss and Mrs. Ida Andrews, all of Cincinnati, Ohio; one brother, George H. Fellers, St. Petersburg, Fla.; five grandchildren; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mrs. and Mrs. Leland Mowry Sr. of Rome. (Obituary from Rome News-Tribune Nov. 26, 1973.)
