Territory of Florida, Leon County (Length: 16 pages)

On this 13th day of October 1832 personally appeared before the Honorable Thomas Rundall Judge of the Superior Court for Leon County Middle District of Florida now sitting Rhesa Oliver a resident of the County & Territory aforesaid aged seventy-six years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed 7th of June 1832. That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers & served for the periods herein stated. That in January 1777 being resident of Cumberland County North Carolina he enlisted in a company commanded by Thomas Hadley Captain, called the County Light horse that he served three or four months & was discharged at the close of the period for which he enlisted.

That in October 1779, he enlisted for nine months in the regular troops & belonged to the 5th North Carolina Regiment commanded by Colonel Armstrong, Major Eaton, & belonged to the company of Captain Daugherty, That during this Enlistment he marched through a great part of North & South Carolina, & was at the battle of Stono, that his Regiment was in the Brigade under the command of General Sumner, – General Lincoln the commander in chief. That in August 1780 he was discharged & received a printed certificate of discharge but has long since lost it.

That he next enlisted for four months & served under Captain Israel Folsom of the North Carolina militia, in Colonel Alston's Regiment, that during this period he was in several skirmishes, in the neighborhood of Deep River, & that he marched up and down the Country in that section. He next enlisted for and expedition against the Tories which lasted two months under Captain Crawford of the Militia of North Carolina & at the period of this Enlistment was discharged.

He next enlisted for the period of the war under Captain John Jones of the North Carolina Militia, in the Regiment of Colonel Ambrose Ramsay, then commanded by Major Griffith the Colonel being then a prisoner at Charleston. That he served here six months was then one skirmish on Cape Fear River – was discharged at the close of the war. That he knows of no person whose testimony he can procure now alive to prove his services.

He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to any pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the Agency of any state that he knows of. That he has been informed that his name is on the roll of regular troops of the State of North

Carolina which was formerly kept at Hillsboro.

I William Hill Secretary of State and for the State aforesaid, do certify that it appears from a book of settlements of the accounts of the Soldiers of the revolutionary Army of the line of this State, that Ricey Oliver was allowed for his services as a Soldier in said Army the sum of £41.51.1. His name does not appear on the musterrolls.

Given under my hand this 4th day of June 1833.

[Veteran was pensioned at the rate of $80 per annum commencing March 4th, 1831, for two years service as a private in the North Carolina militia and Continental line.]
