Phillip Heinley

A former Capitola resident was one of two helicopter pilots killed yesterday afternoon when the craft they were piloting suddenly crashed to the ground at San Francisco's International airport.

Dead were Phillip Edwin Heinley, 37, now of Hayward, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde O. Heinley, 211 Washburn street, Capitola, and Paul Edward Shonkwiler, 22, Fair Oaks.

The two were killed just three minutes after they made a takeoff at the San Francisco airport shortly after 2 o'clock.

Cause of the crash was undetermined. It occurred several hundred yards northwest of the airport terminal near Bayshore highway.

The helicopter belonged to the Rick Helicopter company which said Heinley had taken out Shonkwiler on a trial run. Shonkwiler, the company said, was applying for a job.

Both were veteran marine corps pilots. Heinley had about 1200 hours flying time while Shonkwiler had 875 hours in the whirly-bird craft.

Heinley's father has been in the real estate business in Capitola since World War II.

Heinley was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War and served as a major in the marine reserve.

Services will be conducted at the Wessendorf Chapel Friday at 2 p.m.

Interment will be at Oak-wood Memorial park. A native of Hutchinson, Kan., Heinley is survived by his wife, Marianne, along with his parents.
