On August 3, 1943, a B-17E Flying Fortress (Serial Number 41-2634), with a crew of ten departed Port Moresby for a strike against Japanese forces in Bogadjim, New Guinea. After dropping its bombs and leaving the target area, this plane was attacked by enemy fighters. It was hit in two engines, which caught fire, and the plane went into a dive. Witnesses reported that the plane levelled out slightly before hitting the water 100 yards off shore in Astrolabe Bay. The bomber broke into pieces, and no crew were seen exiting the wreck.

Corporal Stewart A. Lambe entered the U.S. Army Air Forces from Wisconsin and served in the 65th Bombardment Squadron, 43rd Bombardment Group. He was a crewman on this Flying Fortress when it went down, and he was lost in the incident. His remains have not been recovered or identified following the war, and he is still unaccounted-for. Today, Corporal Lambe is memorialized on the Walls of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.
