S/Sgt William A Conkey was listed as the "Section Chief of Intelligence" in the 392nd Bombardment Squadron (in the 30th Bombardment Group).

From The History of the 392nd Bombardment Squadron, July 1945:

"The group newspaper, THE LIBERATOR, was published this month.

This journalistic eagerness is sponsored by INFORMATION-EDUCATION.

Each squadron has its reporter who writes the sports events,

colorful personalities, squadron activities and incidental bon

mots. S/Sgt. WILLIAM A. CONKEY, Intelligence Section Chief,

represents this squadron and reports the PATHFINDER'S news. The

only gripe following the initial publication on 23 July was

inadequate distribution. Approximately fifty (50) copies were

made available to this squadron which logically does not suffice

all of those who would like personal copies to mail home."

The 392nd Bombardment Squadron was assembled at March Field, CA in the summer of 1943. The squadron moved to Barking Sands, Kauai, Hawaii Territory in Oct 1943. In Nov 1943 the squadron moved to Canton Island in the Phoenix Islands, and began combat operations against the Japanese.

Over the next year and a half the squadron kept moving from "one damn island after another". In Jan 1944 the 392nd Bomb Squadron moved to Apamama Island, followed by a move to Kwajalein Island in Mar 1944. Their final move was to Saipan in Aug 1944. They remained there until Feb 1945, at which time they returned to Hawaii. They were sent back to the US in the summer and fall of 1945.
