FISHER, CAROLL ALLEN, First Lieutenant, # 0-676038, USAAF

Caroll A. Fisher was born on 15 May 1915 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Fisher and Verta Odell (Ransom) Fisher (1895-1942). He was married to Beulah H. Fisher, 208 Berkley St, Charleston, West Virginia.

He registered for the WW II draft on 16 October 1940, employed by Carbide Carbon Chemical Co. and described himself as 6’, 160 lbs, with brown hair and gray eyes.

He enlisted in Huntington, West Virginia, on 17 July 1941.

2 Dec 1942: earned his 2nd Lt. commission and wings at Ellis Auxiliary Army Airfield near Marianna, Florida.

5 April 1943: graduated as an Aerial Navigator at Hondo Army Air Field, Texas.

During the night of 15-16 June 1944, a 20th Air Force, 58th Bombardment Wing, 468th Bomb Group, 792nd Bomb Squadron, Kharagpur A.A.B., India, a B-29 serial #42-6230, the “Limber Duggan” departed the airfield at Pengshan, China, on a combat mission and did not return.

They were shot down by an enemy fighter over Wakamatsu Fukuoka, Japan (the first to be shot down over Japan). All of the crew were killed in action.

His remains were buried in a single casket group grave at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery on 8 August 1949 (Sec. 82, Grave 209).

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
