Gazette Information: VICTORIA CROSS,: https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issues/29273/pages/8395. Captain Lanoe George Hawker, Corps of Royal Engineers and 6 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps. On 25th July 1915 when on patrol over France, Captain Hawker attacked three German aircraft in succession. The first, after he had emptied a complete drum of bullets into it, went spinning down, the second was driven to the ground damaged, and the third which he attacked at a height of about 10,000 feet burst into flames and crashed. This particular sortie was just one of the many courageous exploits which Captain Hawker had undertaken during almost a year of constant operational flying and fighting. GAZETTE ISSUE 29157, DISTINGUISHED SERVICE ORDER, The King has been graciously pleased to approve of the appointment to be Companion of the Distinguished Service Order in recognition of gallantry and devotion to duty whilst serving with the Expeditionary Force. For conspicuous gallantry on 19th April 1915, when he succeeded in dropping bombs on the German airship shed at Gontrode from a height of only 200 feet, under circumstances of the greatest risk. Lieutenant Hawker displayed remarkable ingenuity in utilizing an occupied German captive balloon to shield him from fire whilst manoeuvring to drop the bombs.
