The King has been graciously pleased to approve of the grant of the Victoria Cross to the undermentioned for the conspicuous acts of bravery: - On 25 April 1915 during the landing at V beach, Cape Helles, Gallipoli, Commander Unwin of HMS River Clyde left the ship and under murderous fire attempted, with the help of four other men to get the lighters into position. He worked until, suffering from the effects of cold and immersion he was obliged to return to the ship for treatment. Hen then returned to his work against the doctor's orders and completed it. He was later attended by the doctor for three wounds, but once more left the ship, this time in a life-boat, and rescued three men, wounded, in the shallow water.
