Gazette Information: VICTORIA CROSS,: www.london-gazette.co.uk/issue/37086/supplement/2608. Acting Major Frederick Albert Tilston, The Essex-Scottish Regiment, Canadian Infantry Corps. On 1st March 1945 in the Hochwald Forest, Germany, Major Tilston, although wounded in the head, led his company in the attack, through a belt of wire 10 feet deep, to the enemy trenches, personally silenced a machine-gun and was the first to reach the enemy position. Pressing on to the second line he was severely wounded in the hip but carried on, his unshakeable confidence and enthusiasm so inspiring his men that they held firm against great odds. Even when wounded for a third time and hardly conscious, he refused medical attention until he had given complete instructions for holding the position.
