On 23rd June 1944 at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, Corporal Sukanaivalu crawled forward to rescue some wounded men. He brought in two successfully and went out to fetch a third, but on the way back was seriously wounded in the groin and thigh and unable to move the lower part of his body.
