The base was established 1943, with naval aviation flight training being conducted throughout World War II (1943-1945). During the Korean War, the US Air Force utilized the base for training and unit organization. Throughout the Cold War (1954-1991), the base was used by Air Force units of the Tactical Air Command and later (starting in 1957) by the Strategic Air Command. The base was renamed to Grissom Air Force Base on 11 May 1968, in honor of Lt Col Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom. Official ownership transferred from the US Navy to the US Air Force in 1982. With the conclusion of the Persian Gulf War, base realignments transferred Grissom AFB to Grissom Air Reserve Base [ARB].
